When we ask the question "what is proprioception?", the most common reply we get is "balance".

Proprioception is much more than just balance, it is the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement.

Conscious proprioception Conscious proprioception is the ability to focus awareness on discrete elements of the body and is governed by the cerebrum.  The cerebellum, however, is the area in the brain that is largely responsible for coordinating the unconscious aspects of proprioception.

Unconscious proprioception could be demonstrated by our ability to drive a car - we can use the pedals, steering wheel and indicators all whilst looking at the road ahead.

Why is this important for us as therapists?  Proprioception can be impaired by injury, dyfunction and various other causes, such as nerve damage.  This can lead to us being more injury prone....think going over on ones ankle for no apparent reason.

This one day workshop will give you the skills to access proprioception and look at some simple, and advanced ways to improve the proprioception of your clients....and yourself.

It is a highly practical workshop so please wear loose comfortable clothing and be prepared to work barefoot.
